The creation of a painting...

I take hundreds of pictures and make as many sketches as I can from different angles in situ.

Back in the studio I analyse my photographs and sketches and decide on a final composition.

I sketch this more than once so that I get to know it.

I separate off any complex parts and sketch them individually.

I make an underpainting in diluted oil paint to establish the composition on my canvas.

I work on the painting in stages.  I live with it near me when I’m not painting it so that I can see which parts work and which parts don’t.

It is always hard to decide when the painting is finished.  An exhibition deadline is a good stopping point!  Without this I might go on forever working on it!
